Witch Girl

Writings by Joey Grisham
Visuals by Leo Adames

This poem is about a child who claims witchy-ness, who feels powerful, who knows who she is, who she wants to be, who believes in magic. And it's about parents who believe her when she tells them these things - they don't dismiss her. She knows herself better than they can or ever will, even at 5.

Joanna Grisham holds an MFA in creative writing from Georgia College. She recently won the Carnegie Center for Literacy & Learning’s Next Great Writers Contest and was a semi-finalist for The MacGuffin’s Poet Hunt 28 contest and finalist for the 2024 Page Prize in Nonfiction. Her work has appeared in The Bangalore Review, On the Run, Still: The Journal, and other places, and her first chapbook of poems, Phantoms, was published in December 2023 (Finishing Line Press).

Leo Adames is an artist and educator who works in painting, printing, and, more recently, silkscreen mono prints. His works of various subject matter are represented in silkscreens and mono silkscreen prints, still life, and landscapes. Leo likes to paint with music playing and is drawn to the horizontal line as "...a representation of what is now, and what is to be: or maybe it's a symbol of optimism, from dark to light, or something to look forward to."
